Autumn flavors can lean really heavy and warm, and while I absolutely love those cozy vibes, every once in awhile it is good to mix it up with something bright and invigorating! Enter the sparkling pomegranate margarita, the perfect cocktail for fall especially because it is simple, stress-free, and easy to batch and make ahead for gathering!

I also love this cocktail for Halloween, as a nice little nod to Persephone and Hades in greek myth!

Connection between Persephone & Pomegranates

Persephone : Ruler of the Underworld

Persephone, the greek goddess of fertility, was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. One day, as she was walking through a meadow gathering flowers, she was interrupted by Hades, the ruler of the Underworld, who had decided he wanted to marry her. Hades abducted her and brought her down to the Underworld to rule alongside him. Interestingly enough, Persephone did rule with genuine authority and became a true leader of the Underworld. While there, she tasted a bite of pomegranate...

Her mother Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, was distraught and fell into a deep depression. She completely neglected her work as a goddess and the earth grew barren and empty, causing famine.

Zeus eventually sent Hermes to the Underworld to bring Persephone home to her mother. The two goddesses were reunited at last.

However, the pomegranate. While in the Underworld, Persephone had tasted one single pomegranate seed. According to the ancient laws, this obliged her to remain in the Underworld. A compromise was struck wherein Persephone would spend two-thirds of the year with her mother, and one-third in the Underworld with Hades. Thus began seasons, with winter representing the time of year when Persephone was with Hades and Demeter was separated from her daughter. When Persephone returns, spring arrives, bringing joy and warmth and crops.

Pomegranates

While ultimately the cause of Persephone’s eternal commitment to return annually to the Underworld, pomegranates are a perfect autumn fruit. Harvested from September through December, these gorgeous fruits are beautiful, tasty, and antioxidant rich. We are lucky to have a pomegranate tree in our new home, and while the crop this year was pretty tiny, I am so excited to learn to care for this tree and harvest beautiful pomegranates in the future!

A Perfect Autumn Cocktail

Sparkling Pomegranate Margarita Punch Bowl

This cocktail really is gorgeous and unique but quite simple! The best both worlds, which I appreciate, especially when you are hosting and have a million other things on your mind. I recently made this punch bowl for Friendsgiving, and it was a huge hit! It couldn’t have been more stress free for me also.

I simply combined the ingredients in a bowl, chilled them, and set them out with a bottle of sparkling champagne and garnishes by their side! Everyone helped themselves to one or two or maybe more, which is the best feeling!

If you are looking for a stress free autumn cocktail that offers brightness, unique flavors, and ease - this is definitely worth trying!
